Washington Sundar is an Indian international cricketer. Washington Sundar Early Life and Family

Washington Sundara was born on 5 October 1999 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, into a Hindu family. His father, Mani Sundar, named him in tribute to P.D. Washington, a man who had supported his own cricketing aspirations.
Sundar’s father, M. Sundar, a cricketer who made it to the Tamil Nadu Ranji probables without getting into the final squad, named him Washington to honor his godfather, Mr. Washington, who would buy bats for him and pay his fees.
Sundar’s sister, Shailaja Sundar (also known as M. S. Shailaja), is a professional cricketer as well. Sundar began playing cricket at the young age of four and five.

For his early education, he attended St. Bede’s Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School and later pursued his undergraduate studies at the Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science, Chennai.
Sundar became the youngest player to debut for India in T20Is, at the age of 18 years and 80 days.

Washington Sundar Cricket Career

Washington Sundar Domestic Career

Sundar started playing domestic cricket for Tamil Nadu and made his first-class debut in the 2016-2017 Ranji Trophy for Tamil Nadu on 6 October 2016.
In October 2017, he scored his maiden first-class century for Tamil Nadu against Tripura in the 2017–18 Ranji Trophy.
He appeared in 31 first-class matches in which he scored 1945 runs at an average of 29.92 and took 65 wickets to date with his best bowling figure of 6/87.
Washington Sundar IPL Career

Sundar made his IPL debut in the 2017 IPL season with the Rising Pune Supergiants as a replacement for Ravichandran Ashwin. Throughout the season, he impressed by taking 8 wickets with an excellent economy rate of 6.16.
He earned the ‘Player of the Match’ award in Qualifier 1 for his outstanding bowling performance against the Mumbai Indians, claiming 3 wickets for just 16 runs.
In the 2018 auction, he was acquired by Virat Kohli who led Royal Challengers Bangalore for INR 3.2 crore. However, over the next two seasons, he appeared in only 10 matches, picking up 8 wickets and scoring 66 runs.

Sundar’s breakthrough came in 2020 when he played 15 games for RCB, taking 8 wickets. Despite bowling during the powerplay, he maintained an impressive economy rate of 5.96 runs per over.
The following season saw a dip in his performance, as he featured in just 6 matches, taking only 3 wickets and scoring only 31 runs. As a result, RCB released him ahead of the 2022 IPL Mega Auction.
In 2022, Sundar was signed by Sunrisers Hyderabad for INR 8.75 crore. He played 9 matches that season, taking 6 wickets but struggling with an economy rate of 8.54. His batting also faltered, managing just 101 runs at an average of 14.43.

In the 2023 IPL season, he played 7 games for SRH where he picked up 3 wickets with an economy rate of 8.26. Despite his underwhelming performance, SRH retained him for the IPL 2024 at the same price of INR 8.75 crores.
Washington Sundar International Career

After his brilliant performance in domestic cricket and IPL, Washington Sundar got the chance to showcase his talent on the international stage. He made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka in Mohali, (Punjab, India) and his T20I debut against the same team in Mumbai.
Thanks to his consistent excellence in white-ball cricket, the Indian selectors gave him a chance in red-ball cricket, too. He made his Test debut against Australia in Brisbane (Australia).
T20 Career
Washington Sundar made his T20I debut against Sri Lanka in Mumbai on 24 December 2017. He took 1 wicket for 22 runs but didn’t get a chance to bat.
His next appearance came in March 2018 during the Nidahas Trophy, a tri-series featuring Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. In the opening game against Sri Lanka, he picked up 2 wickets for 28 runs. However, he went wicketless in the following match against Bangladesh.

He maintained his trademark economy, conceding just 23 runs in four overs. In his fifth match against Bangladesh, Sundar delivered an outstanding performance, claiming 3 wickets for 22 runs.
He continued his fine form in the tri-series final, taking 1 wicket for 20 runs. His exceptional bowling throughout the series earned him the “Player of The Series” award.
In August 2019, he played in three T20I matches against the West Indies. In the series opener match, he batted for the first time in T20I, remaining unbeaten with 8 runs off 5 balls. Across three games, he took two wickets and maintained an economy rate of 6.62 runs per over.
After that, he featured in two T20I against South Africa, where he maintained an economy rate of 6.57 but remained wicketless.
In November 2019, Sundar played three T20I against Bangladesh, claiming just one wicket with an economy of 7 runs per over. He concluded the year with a T20I series against the West Indies in December. His first match was costly, conceding 34 runs in three overs while managing to take only one wicket.

In January 2020, he played three T20Is against Sri Lanka. The opening match was washed out due to rain, but in the remaining two games, he clinched 3 wickets for 66 runs.
Following this, he featured in two away T20Is against New Zealand, where his performance dipped, taking just one wicket with an economy of 8.80. Later in December 2020, Sundar traveled to Australia for a three-match T20I series.
Across all three matches, he delivered a modest performance, taking just two wickets with an economy rate of 7.08 and scoring only 14 runs. He then participated in a 5-match T20I series at home.
In the first three games, Sundar performed admirably, securing 4 wickets with an economy rate of 7.30 runs per over. However, his form dipped in the following two T20Is, where his economy rate rose to 13 runs per over.

Later, Sundar featured in T20I match against New Zealand in November 2022, claiming one wicket for 24 runs in two overs.
His most recent T20I appearance came against Afghanistan in January 2024, where he recorded his career-best bowling figures of 3 wickets for 18 runs. As of May 2024, Washington Sundar has played 43 T20I matches, amassing 34 wickets.
Sundar Test Career

During India’s 2020-2021 Tour of Australia, Washington Sundar was initially chosen as a net bowler. However, due to multiple injuries among teammates and COVID-19 restrictions, he received his Test cap on 15 January 2021, just before the final Test at Gaba, Brisbane.
Sundar claimed four wickets in the match, including his first Test dismissal, that of the modern-day great Steve Smith.
In the second innings, with India struggling at 186 for 6, he scored 62 runs and forged a 123-runs partnership with Shardul Thakur, which played a crucial role in securing a historic victory for India on the fifth day of the Gaba Test.

With this remarkable debut, Sundar also became the third Indian to score a half-century on Test debut in Australia.
As of 2024, Sundar has appeared in only four Test matches, amassing 265 runs with three 50+ scores. However, his bowling performance has been underwhelming, yielding just six wickets.
In September 2024, he was added to the test squad of the Indian team for the 3-match test series against New Zealand.

Washington Sundar debuted in ODI cricket on December 13, 2017, against Sri Lanka. Though he didn’t get a chance to bat, he claimed one wicket with a bowling economy of 6.50 runs per over.
His unimpressive performance led to him being out of the Indian ODI playing eleven for more than 4 years.

Sundar made his comeback in the Indian Team in February 2022 and was selected for three ODIs in the West Indies series.
