World Test Championship 2023-2025 Qualification Scenario
India’s chances to qualify for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 Final go on serious discussion after losing the 2nd Pink-Ball Test against Australia at Adelaide by 10 wickets on Sunday in the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.
After getting drafted from Australia India’s percentage slipped from 61.11 to 57.29. And also slipped down to the third position after South Africa and Australia. India will only have more tests required in this series to play and qualify for the third consecutive WTC Final.
The challenge arises following their sixth defeat in the test and fourth in just two months since 3-0 whitewash at home by New Zealand.
Australia’s 9th win in the WTC cycle shored up their PCT from 57.69 to 60.71 ahead of second-ranked South Africa with 59.26 PCT. South Africa has a chance to overtake the defending champions if they beat Sri Lanka in the second test in Gqeberha.
India WTC Qualification Scenario
To qualify for the WTC Final India must be required to win all three remaining matches from here, or else they could win two of three matches and draw one of them and finish with a PCT of 60.52. By securing three entire wins, Team India can amass 146 points, achieving a dominant 64.05 PCT, a total that Australia could not surpass.
How can India qualify for WTC final 2025?
If India Beats Australia By 3-2: They will finish with 134 points and a PCT of 58.77. On the other hand, Australia have yet to play 2 tests with Sri Lanka after this series. If Australia wins both of their tests against Sri Lanka they can finish best with 126 points and a 55.26 PCT.
Similarly, South Africa could increase their PCT up to 69.44 with three wins in their remaining games at home against Sri Lanka & Pakistan.
If India Best Australia By 3-1: They will finish with 138 points and a PCT of 60.52. Then Australia will be only able to finish with a 57 PCT. If they win their remaining games at Sri Lanka it will also eliminate them from the race to qualify for WTC Final.
If India draws BGT By 2-2 against Australia: They will finish up with 126 points, and Australia has got maximum chance to qualify or can move ahead by 130 points by the end of the series and knock India out of the WTC final race.
If India manages to win the Sydney Test, they will qualify for the 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) final if Sri Lanka beats Australia by a 2-0 or 1-0 margin. If the series ends 0-0, India will qualify for the summit clash.
