He grew up in his early age without no access to internet facilities or telephone communications.

Shamar Joseph grew up in a family with three sisters and five brothers. He idolised and was inspired by Curtly Ambrose and Cortney Walsh, opening bowlers of the West Indies cricket team, watching their highlights and imitating them in his tape ball games around the village.

His early bowling practice involved using fruits like lemons, guavas, limes, and peaches, along with a tape ball, in what locals referred to as “Jungle-land cricket“. He also practiced with balls made of melted plastic bottles.

Shamar Joseph’s Early Life

Shamar Joseph's Early Life

Before playing cricket, Shamar Joseph worked with his father and siblings in the logging industry, where he felled and chopped logs in Baracara and transported the timber down the Canje River to Amsterdam.

After having a serious incident where his family was nearly hit by a falling tree, Joseph decided to move away from Baracara and relocated to New Amsterdam, where he finds a job to support his family.

After this, he found a job first in construction, where he worked as a labourer, and then, after some time, he worked as a security guard at the Amalgamated Security Services in Scotiabank, New Amsterdam.

His role as a security guard involved working extended 12-hour shifts, both during he day and at night, leaving him with limited time for cricket pursuit. With encouragement from his fiancée, Joseph ultimately chose to leave his job and dedicate himself entirely to his cricketing dreams.

He experienced his first game of cricket playing for Tucber Park Cricket Club in a few first-division and second-division matches, and became the first test cricketer from Baracara.

He attended a fast bowling clinic in Berbice conducted by Curtly Ambrose. He then further asserted his dominance by taking eight wickets in a trial match, which ultimately led to his selection for first-class cricket.

He was an important part of the Guyana Amazon Warriors squad that won the 2023 Caribbean Premier League (CPL) title.
